What are Hormones?

Hormones are chemicals that are produced in our endocrine glands, they are released into the bloodstream and they travel around our bodies telling certain cells what to do.

Hormones are important for regulating many different processes in the body including appetite & metabolism, sleep cycles, reproductive cycles and sexual function, body temperature and mood. They are fundamental to all the systems of your body.

As women age, they will encounter reproductive hormone related issues. This is especially true as they approach menopause or even perimenopause

What are the causes of Hormone imbalance?

The menopause is caused by a change in the balance of the body’s sex hormones, which occurs as you get older. It happens when your ovaries stop producing as much of the hormone estrogen. The menopause is one of the common causes of hormone imbalance. Other causes of hormone imbalance are stress, the food we eat, our body weight and the toxins we absorb.

How can Yoga help?

During the menopausal years it is essential to try to balance our hormones for good health and practicing Yoga can really help. Among the many benefits that set yoga apart, from other forms of physical exercise, is the effect yoga postures and breathing practices have, not only on the muscles and bones of the body, but also on your organs and glands.

The sequences of poses that we practice in this class stimulate the ovaries, pituitary and adrenal glands to produce more hormones.  These postures also have a calming, soothing and quieting effect on the nervous system and when practiced regularly can help ease the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

By introducing a regular practice which includes all categories of poses (standing, sitting, laying down, back and forward bends, twist and inverted (upside down) poses) we stimulate and activate the glands, organs, tissues, and cells of the body.  Yoga’s inverted poses are particularly important during menopause as they have a powerful effect on the neuroendocrine system, allowing fresh oxygenated blood to flow to the glands in the head and neck.

Stress is one of the biggest factors that affects our hormone balance so if we can learn the tools to bring stillness to the mind and calm the nervous system this too will help to balance our hormones.

Yoga Nidra helps activate the relaxation response and improves the functioning of your nervous system and endocrine system which affects your hormones. Also yoga Nidra helps cells regenerate and repair which in turn helps decrease anxiety and improves your mood.

Example Poses to aid Hormone Balancing

Downward Dog

This pose tenses the body and impacts all the endocrine glands by massaging (depressurizing and repressurizing) them which causes hormone secretion aiding the rebalancing process. 

Other effects of downward dog are the reduction in the heavy headed feeling associated with menopause and hot flushes.

Back Bend

Backbend poses, such as cobra or bridge pose, can improve the functioning of the Adrenal gland by massaging (depressurizing and repressurizing) it.

A functioning adrenal gland can help prevent fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, poor sleep and night sweats. 

Adrenal fatigue can worsen a woman’s menopause symptoms.

Seated Twist

This pose also stimulates and replenishes the Adrenal gland producing the same affects and benefit as the back bend pose. 

The Seated Twist is a restorative yoga pose that also promotes good digestion and encourages spinal mobility.
